Like ‘Fresh,’ this is also a suspenseful movie that builds up to the climax, until the moment of truth is finally realized by the protagonist. ‘The Invitation’ can be called a much more intense narrative than ‘Fresh’ as it lacks humor, but the former makes up for it with its gripping storyline. All hell breaks loose as the truth is finally out in the open and Will and Kira are forced to fight for their survival. As the story progresses, Will’s suspicions heighten as he notices the brewing of something sinister. The out-of-the-blue invitation already has Will feeling a bit suspicious about the whole situation, but he takes a leap of faith and attends the lavish dinner. ‘The Invitation’ invites you to watch Will taking his girlfriend Kira to a dinner party hosted by his ex-wife with her husband and some new friends. Both of the movies have a dark undertone that sets the overall mood and vibe of the narrative. Much like ‘Fresh,’ it follows the theme of regret and the unmasking of a person that seemingly appeared to be just fine, while still finding some room for humor. On reaching the farm, she soon begins to second guess everything about her boyfriend, their relationship, and even herself. With plenty of visual style and two superb lead performances, Fresh is a surprising and twisted treat of a thriller that you won't want to miss.Despite being a horrifying thriller, the movie doesn’t fail to add a hint of humor here and there throughout the narrative to keep things from going too dark. There's catharsis in the finale, yet it all feels just a bit too neat for what's come before.Įverything else is too good to let the finale derail the entire movie though. We do get another outstanding dance routine with Noa and Steve, but otherwise, we're firmly in standard thriller territory. It's a bit of a shame that things settle into a more conventional rhythm in the final third. Yet the dark laughs in Lauryn Kahn's sharp script keep coming, serving to heighten the surreal vibe and keeping things from getting too heavy. ![]() It's pitch-black humour, of course, as there's nothing inherently comedic about the situation itself. Her comic timing is spot-on too because, here's the thing, Fresh is often very funny. You don't ever know where Fresh is going, keeping you engrossed throughout. As Noa adjusts to her new reality, you'll question whether she's genuinely been taken in by Steve or if she's playing an even better game than him. As he dances through the halls of his gorgeous home, you could totally imagine yourself being taken in by him.ĭaisy Edgar-Jones is equally magnetic as Noa and much like the plot keeps you guessing, so does she. There are times you might want to look away in horror at the situation Noa finds herself in, yet Sebastian Stan proves to be so charming even when we know Steve's true intentions. However, the execution of the twist and the way the movie unfolds every horrific detail is excellent. Combined with Steve seeming just too good to be true, you won't be surprised that he turns out to be a wrong'un. Before you can say 'that's a TERRIBLE idea', Noa finds herself in a situation straight from anybody's worst nightmares.Ĭave certainly drops hints in the first act of the movie of what's in store, such as a lot of extreme close ups of mouths. It doesn't take long for Noa to become smitten with Steve and despite her best friend Mollie's (Jonica T Gibbs) skepticism, Noa accepts his invitation to spend a romantic weekend away. ![]() Frustrated with dating apps and painfully bad dates, Noa (Edgar-Jones) decides to take a chance on the charming Steve (Stan) when he tries to flirt over vegetables. We'll preserve the mystery of Fresh's big reveal, but let's dig into more of the set-up.
